Kill SwitchKlick started out as a solo project of Seattle musician d.A. Sebasstian in 1991 but grew into more of a band project with Sebasstian acting as frontman and songwriter. Five albums later, KSK remains Sebasstian's project for his more electronic music, while he takes out his other musical urges in his solo albums. So while you may not have heard of KSK, they've apparently paid their duties to justify a best-of compilation, slyly titled Milkin' it for All it's Worth.

The only real way to describe Kill SwitchKlick's music is through an oft-abused term: industrial. While these songs don't get quite as loud and angry as the more well-known industrial music of Ministry and Nine Inch Nails, they're obviously in the same pool. Too well structured and vocal-focused to truly be electronica, they still contain too many electronic elements to fall into a straight-forward rock genre. It's an odd mix that works in some doses but gets a bit overbearing by the end of this release.

The most industrial songs are the band's best, like the blazing rock of "Produkt A." and the head-bobbing angry romp of "Fascist Smash." There's some nice effects in the angst-laden "Living in Your Hell II," but Sebasstian sounds like he's trying too hard to be all dark and scary. There's a lot of scary effect-laden growling in "Shitkicker," but the song really goes nowhere. It's maybe not till "deCanonized" that the band really proves to be an industrial-rock contender. This song would have fit in with the genre's heyday. Another highlight is "Celebrate the Misery," one that shows a more organic feel, moody and powerful with some cool organ, and this track could show where the band should be headed.

Many of these songs show off the band's more electronic side, like the repetitive, moody "Konsonent" and the previously unreleased "Wacked (Little Roadkill Superstar)," which uses a host of electronic samples and loops to give it a kind of My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult feel. "Follow Me," another remix here, is full of distorted vocals and synthesized beats but with layers of guitar on top to give it a more organic feel.

There's also a video for the song "Produkt (Mass Market Mix)," one of the album's more energetic tracks that includes Sebasstian yelling into a megaphone. Brief glimpses of the band are seen, but mostly this is an odd, animated affair. It still feels simple, almost amateurish, and, in fact, a best-of compilation for this band seems similarly out of place. While Kill SwitchKlick clearly rocks has some unique sounds, they sound like a vintage underground band, the kind you'd expect to find buried in piles of vinyl and perhaps lost after the mid-90's. Likely ahead of their time in '91, they now seem behind it.

Format: CD
Middle Pillar Review:
This collection contains a barrage of KSK's most mind numbing, aggro-stomping infectious material. Included are original demos, outtakes and a previously unreleased track, as well as re-mixes by Tony James and Neal X of Sigue Sigue Sputnik, not to mention a quicktime video!

Kill Switch...Klick - Milkin' It For All It's Worth - CD (2001 / Cleopatra)

IT'S TRUE ELECTRO ROCK'N'ROLL!!!

KILL SWITCH...KLICK - Milkin' it for all it's worth (The Best of)
